At WEPS, we believe that mathematics is an essential skill for everyday life. Our goal is to help all students develop confidence and a positive attitude towards maths, while also understanding how it connects to the real world.
We focus on building strong foundations in understanding, fluency, problem solving and reasoning. We want students to not only know how to work with numbers but also to think logically, explain their ideas, and apply maths in practical situations.
Our teachers carefully plan lessons in year level Pods (teams of 3 or 4), to suit the needs of all students. In these planning meetings, the teachers and a Learning Specialist work together to build each other’s content knowledge and capacity to implement the learning and make the necessary adjustments so students are challenged at their level.
We follow the Victorian Curriculum 2.0 and use student progress data to guide our teaching. Maths is taught through 4x 75minute lessons a week, following the whole school agreed instructional model.
The whole school follows a structured, set learning sequence that provides learning opportunities for each area of the mathematics curriculum. This scope and sequence is supported by a whole school agreed upon assessment schedule. These work samples are then shared with parents to inform them of their child’s progress.
