Grachus comes along to school each Wednesday and hears grade 1 and 2 children read. We love having Grachus in the grade 1/2 learning community. During break times he is outside mingling with all the students.
The main objective of this program is to provide a relaxed and ‘dog friendly’ atmosphere, which allows the learner to practice the skill of reading.
A bond is encouraged between the child and the dog by having the same child read to the same dog each week.
Read to Dog (RtD) provides a coordinated partnership response for children, young people and their families to focus on and improve literacy and social and emotional awareness. The learners most likely to benefit from RtD are those with additional needs and vulnerabilities.
